With the term Search and Rescue (S.A.R.) we mean the process of searching, locating, accessing, providing immediate assistance, stabilizing, and extricating (transporting to a safe place) people who are in danger or threatened by imminent danger. The shorter the time between the deployment and victim localization is, the more likely the victim might still be rescued.

The EU Civil Protection Mechanism aims to ensure and strengthen cooperation between EU member states and participating states for civil protection and to improve disaster prevention, preparedness, and response.

The basic principles of search management are divided into organization, management, leadership, strategy, tactics, and clue awareness.
